June 3 to 13, 2024 - The 60th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiaries Bodies (SB60) took place in Bonn, Germany. Also called the 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference, it brought together an estimated 6,000 attendees to prepare and shape the agenda for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan later this year. This year, we contributed to several side events led by partners to elevate the importance of soil health.

Emphasizing the critical need for sustainable farming practices, the Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH) and SNV held a side event on the second day of the UN Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment titled “From the soil up: How can agroecology and regenerative agriculture transform food systems.”

On 24 July, the Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH), the Agroecology Coalition, the Coalition of Action on Healthy Diets from Sustainable FS for Children and All (HDSFS), and the Food is Never Waste Coalition convened an official side event at the UN Food Systems Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS STM+2) to discuss the link between agroecology, soil health and nutrition for all.

On 15 May, the Netherlands Food Partnership (NFP) convened a network session to discuss the potential the Soil Health Resolution offers for transforming food systems as per their objectives. NFP is a consortium of initiatives by Dutch organizations and partners from Low and Middle-Income Countries working towards food and nutrition security and achieving SDG2 by 2030. With soil serving as the very foundation of food systems, scaling soil health is a major part of their remit.

10 MAY 2023: The Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH) hosted a Breakout Session at the AIM for Climate Summit in Washington, DC, USA. Global leaders from policy, industry, producer organisations, civil society groups, and scientists and researchers came together for the three-day Summit to drive their work on climate-smart agriculture and innovations in food systems.

At the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27), soil received due attention in the climate negotiations.

At a recent virtual roundtable discussion organised by Accelerating Impacts of CHIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA), policy experts involved in the development of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) met to share key opportunities and barriers for integrating soil health into national climate change adaptation and mitigation plans.

On September 13th, the Coalition of Action for Soil Health (CA4SH) brought together partners from the public sector, research institutions and more to exchange ideas and provide updates on their efforts to scale up soil health globally.

A new brochure, Through the Lens of Drought, details highlights, outcomes and the way forward for advancing sustainable solutions for land restoration and drought resilience in the wake of the UNCCD COP15.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) announced that the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) will hold its first-ever Food Systems Pavilion, and will be co-hosted by CA4SH.

CA4SH is leveraging a global call to action at the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the form of the Soil Health Resolution of Soil Champions.
