UNEA-6 Side Event - Fostering national actions: strengthen ambition of national contributions to climate and biodiversity for Agriculture and Food Systems

To reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Land targets, Member States need to raise their ambition and scale up implementation of climate and biodiversity actions, particularly in agriculture and food systems, given the fact that up to 42% of GHG emissions and 70% of biodiversity loss are due to unsustainable production and consumption.

To make this happen, we need a swift transformation in our approach to producing, distributing, and consuming food. This involves transitioning to nature-positive production methods, minimizing food loss and waste, and embracing healthier and more sustainable diets.

At COP 28, more than 160 Countries committed to integrate agriculture and food systems into NDC and NBSAPs by supporting the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action. Additionally, as a result of the findings from the First Global Stocktake, countries acknowledged the necessity of harmonizing efforts across climate change, biodiversity preservation, and land conservation to safeguard food security.

The event will address the challenges aligning biodiversity preservation, climate action, and land conservation actions within the realm of agriculture and food security at the national level. An interactive web-based guidance tool to integrate agriculture and food systems in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) developed by WWF, FAO, UNEP, Alliance of Bioversity/Ciat and partners, will be launched.

Policymakers, practitioners, and investors will be able to use the guidance tool to identify relevant policy options and measures to make progress towards the NDCs and the Paris Agreement food-related targets while also achieving the Biodiversity and Land Convention targets.
