From the Ground Up: Caring for Soils to Nourish the Future

Date: Thursday, 5 December 2024

Time: 1 pm to 3 pm GMT (3pm to 5 pm EAT)

Venue: Microsoft Teams and LinkedIn Live

Organized by: International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC)

Occasion: Global Fertilizer Day, World Food Day and World Soil Day Celebrations

Background

The right to food is a fundamental human right, yet millions of people globally still experience hunger and malnutrition. Achieving food security and improved nutrition remains a critical challenge, exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and political instability. On the other hand, sustainable agriculture, soil health, and responsible fertilizer use are essential to ensuring that the world’s food production meets rising demand while protecting the environment and natural resources.

In October, two global observances—Global Fertilizer Day on October 13th and World Food Day on October 16th—highlighted the importance of agriculture and fertilizers in addressing global food security challenges. On December 5, World Soil Day 2024 will emphasize the theme “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage," emphasizing the importance of accurate soil data and information to understand soil characteristics and make informed decisions about sustainable soil management.

This webinar aims to bring together experts, policymakers, and agricultural stakeholders to explore how fertilizers, soil health, and sustainable agricultural practices can collectively enhance food security, improve livelihoods, and protect our environment.

Objectives

  • Highlight the Role of Fertilizers and Soil Health in Global Food Security

  • Explore how responsible fertilizer use and maintaining healthy soils contribute to sustainable food production, reducing malnutrition and hunger, and supporting smallholder farmers worldwide.

  • Promote Sustainable Fertilizer Use, Soil Health, and Climate-Resilient Agriculture

  • Discuss innovative practices and technologies in fertilizer use that preserve soil health, mitigate environmental impacts, and ensure long-term agricultural sustainability and resilience.

  • Celebrate Success Stories and Best Practices in Soil Health and Fertilizer Use

  • Share global success stories that showcase how improved food security has been achieved through sustainable fertilizer use and soil conservation practices, offering replicable models for others.

  • Launch the “The Answer Lies Beneath Our Feet” competition, inviting impactful Soil

  • Health stories that showcase IFDC’s interventions. Participants can share how environments have transformed—from dry to green landscapes, higher crop yields, improved soil health, and better livelihoods. Submissions can be in the form of photos, videos, or written stories.
